HOME OF LANCASHIRE SUPER SENIORS – WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION

Lancashire Super Seniors (LSS) traces its roots back to the early 1980’s when Ormskirk GC Past Captain, Dick Berry, together with Albert Woodtli, Nick Foy and Roy Moore from Davyhulme Park GC, initiated a series of seniors’ matches against various clubs throughout the County Palatine of Lancashire. Ian Woolley, a Past President of Lancashire and Past Captain of Pleasington GC, helped to consolidate the section to be succeeded, in turn, by Frank Seed of Pleasington GC. Frank handed the reins over to Lancaster Golf Club’s Mike Gray for the 2008 season and under Mike’s stewardship, Lancashire Seniors, as Northern Seniors’ League Champions, won the 2014 English Counties Seniors’ title at Hindhead for the first time, following several years of near misses.

Lancashire Super Seniors’ was formed during the 2014/15 winter season, stewarded by Keith Gardner (Stand GC) and Keith Hick (Hesketh GC), to maintain the camaraderie and friendships built up over the years amongst players no longer qualifying for Seniors’ County team selection.

Super Seniors’ match day format consists of 18 holes, normally 12-a-side 4BBB scratch or handicap games, played against Golf Clubs across the County, together with matches against area golf associations and other Counties. The seasons’ matches are topped and tailed with pre and end-of-season competitions, which are used to both plan ahead and reflect upon the years’ golf.

The LSS Palatine Trophy was introduced in 2018, to celebrate all that is good about Seniors’ golf and recognise ‘those who had gone before’. New for the 2021 season is the Keith Gardner Memorial Trophy, played as an integral part of the Pre-Season day at Stand GC. This new Trophy pays tribute to LSS’s first Team Captain, Keith Gardner, whose tireless efforts helped establish the matches and events we enjoy today. The current schedule of matches is shown on the separate Super Seniors’ Fixture List.

Our Group has a qualifying age for new members of 60 and over and with a World Handicap Index (WHI) up to 9.9 from 1st January of the current year. This handicap range caters for Scratch and Handicap matches alike, taking a balanced view to maximise enjoyment whilst keeping the competitive juices flowing. Anyone interested in playing with the Lancashire Super Seniors is asked to contact either Secretary – Keith Hick of Hesketh GC, or Team Captain – Clive Appleby of Fairhaven GC
